Creative with Sidewalk Chalk Ice
Take your run of the mill outdoor summer kid's toy to the next level! This has to be the "coolest" way to paint on the hot summer sidewalks! Let's make paintsicles!
Toddler Art Paintsicles
I live near Floresville and La Vernia in South Texas, so you can imagine that summer gets crazy hot. Creating with ice is the perfect summer project for toddlers and older siblings. The paintsicles are ice, they will melt just as fast as any other ice cube, but that is half the fun, make a quick design with one color or make several batches!
Another great option is making large ice blocks from anything that you can easily cut container open (cardboard milk containers) and remove the ice or a container that as the ice melts it will loosen (yogurt cups or large yogurt containers) and come out. Get your toddler art enthusiasts involved in prepping it adds to the magic when the painting begins!
Materials:
1.5 cups of water
Sidewalk chalk, little nubs of leftover chalk are perfect
Ice cube tray or plastic containers
Freezer
Instructions:
This recipe will make approximately one full ice tray of one color.
Begin by grating the one color of sidewalk chalk into a pouring measuring cup.
Add 6 tablespoons of cornstarch to the measuring cup.
Add 1.5 cups of water and whisk.
Pour the mixture into an ice cube tray or container.
Repeat for each color you want to make.
Place popsicle sticks diagonally into the ice cube trays.
Freeze.
Ice chalk should be used the same day it’s made. Take outside, wet the sidewalk before painting, and create!
If you are concerned about staining your sidewalk, be sure to test a small area with the paintsicles. Also, use a hose to spray off the sidewalk while still wet to avoid stains.
Clean-Up:Â Use a high-pressure water hose. You may need to wet and spray 2-3 times to completely remove it.
